In the quiet, rolling hills of Trans-Nzoia and the rugged, arid landscapes of West Pokot in Kenya, the school bell rings not only as a call to learning but as a promise.
A promise that today, a child will eat.
A promise that hunger will not stand in the way of education.
A promise, simple and sacred: Lishe kwa Mtoto (Feed the Child.)
In many parts of Kenya, hunger remains a silent emergency. Children some as young as four walk long distances to reach school each morning, often on empty stomachs. Without food, they cannot concentrate. Some faint during class. Others simply stop attending.
Faced with this growing need, Rays of Hope, a faith-based community organization, responded. What began as a small act of compassion has grown into a movement of faith, justice, and resilience known as Lishe Kwa Mtoto (Food for the Child).
The initiative now provides daily lunch to over 10,000 primary school children, aged 4 to 15, across public schools in Trans-Nzoia and West Pokot counties. Meals are prepared using organic, locally grown produce sourced from nearby farms reducing costs, supporting smallholder farmers, and promoting sustainable food systems.
Our mission goes beyond feeding it is about nurturing creation-conscious communities. By working with local farmers and schools, we strengthen both the land and the people who depend on it. Students are introduced to small kitchen gardens, tree planting, and the biblical understanding that to care for creation is to honor the Creator.
This work has become even more urgent as climate change continues to disrupt rainfall patterns, with droughts and floods alternating unpredictably. During recent floods, Ray of Hope extended its compassion to over 2,000 households, supplying essential food and emergency provisions demonstrating that creation care is also about community care.
Every meal shared, every seed planted, and every child nourished is a testimony to God’s love and the sacredness of community. Through simple acts of service, faith is made visible faith that feeds, heals, and sustains.
As we look ahead to COP30 and the global call for climate justice, our commitment remains steadfast: to protect both people and the planet, beginning right where we are. We share this story with gratitude, as a reminder that creation justice begins with compassion one plate, one prayer, and one child at a time.
