This year, a new Feast Day is being added to the ecumenical lectionary calendar. It is a once-in-a-
lifetime event and worth paying attention to. We on the Worship Team offer these materials so congregations can easily find resources for honoring the change during worship, when teaching about the change in small groups and classes, and to facilitate reflecting on the importance of this moment for the new Feast.

The Feast of Creation is being added to the lectionary in 2026, during a time of crisis for the environment and those who depend on it for life, which is all of us. The climate is changing due to the actions of humans who have changed the make-up of the atmosphere and concentrated gases that trap energy near the Earth’s surface. This change in the atmosphere is changing patterns for storms, fires, precipitation, forests, and ocean currents everywhere. It’s even changing the ways that people can grow food and raise families. So caring for Creation and working for justice for those most impacted by the changes to Creation’s patterns has never been more timely or important. Now is the moment for the new Feast of Creation.

That said, the news is not all terrible. We are a Christian people of hope, and we believe in a God who makes all things new. Therefore, worship centered around this Feast Day will be a celebration of God’s creative power and our hope for all of Creation. The materials provided for this season explore the new lectionary texts for the Feast Day and suggest ways to engage with them for people of all ages and in many contexts. They can be adapted for use in worship and educational settings for churches throughout the United Methodist connection.
