Our natural world is a net-zero world, where the ebb and flow of the carbon cycle offers a life of wellbeing and goodness that comes directly from the Creator. Last year my husband and I began making our yard friendlier for native plants and wildlife. Blooming right now is our new wild, native cranberry! June blooms are a reminder that the Creator has given us everything we need for a sustaining and nourishing life. I do not need to add anything to God’s good world, and especially not fossil fuels or fossil fuel products such as convenience plastics or petrochemical fertilizers.
In the June issue of the United Methodist Creation Justice newsletter find articles and webinars to explore and celebrate the net-zero efforts that are growing in every part of United Methodism, from the agencies to the local churches. Check your Annual Conference handbook, as some Annual Conferences this month will be considering net-zero resolutions. And United Methodists from Global Missions to United Women in Faith are also reaching out as collaborative partners—including with the EPA—to gain tools and guides to help us better achieve net-zero goals and commitments and reduce waste.
Mark your calendar also to attend the Movement Café on June 21st. Our June topic is net-zero, specifically the Just and Equitable Interagency Commitment to Net-Zero. Joining us are Rev. Jenny Phillips, Senior Technical Advisor, Environmental Sustainability at General Board of Global Ministries and Jake Barnett, Managing Director, Sustainable Investment Strategies at Wespath. Conversation will help us define what net-zero means for our denomination. Come and hear about the work, the tools, the partnerships, and how we are all learning together as people of faith to ensure a just, equitable, and net-zero future.
