A brand-new Christian feast day, the Feast of Creation, comes to the worldwide church this year on September 1st. This new feast day is the culmination of years of discernment across Christian traditions globally, starting in earnest in March at Assisi, Italy, in 2024. For United Methodists and denominations following the Revised Common Lectionary, this new holy day will be listed as Creation in Christ Sunday. Texts for the observance will follow the Year A, B, and C, liturgical cycle.
Christian traditions may share one faith in Jesus Christ, but they also have differences. These differences generally arise from the fact that Christians around the world speak different languages and share different foods and cultural norms. Adding to that is that Christianity has a long history of faithful expression and discernment. Because there is not one world church, but many, it was vital that there was an ecumenical process toward establishing a Feast of Creation/Creation of Christ Sunday that all could share. Think of this as taking the verse “where two or more are gathered” and going global.
Does this mean that everyone will celebrate in the same way? No. But it does mean that participating traditions share in careful discernment and dialogue together to produce a common understanding of why a Feast of Creation/Creation in Christ Sunday is an urgent and faithful step in the life of the church and the heart of every Christian disciple. For those following the Revised Common Lectionary, the name Creation in Christ was chosen specifically to emphasize the person of Christ and the Triune nature of our faith.
The United Methodist Church, including The United Methodist Board of Discipleship has worked closely with the effort all along the way. The United Methodist Creation Justice Movement also celebrates this new Feast of Creation/Creation in Christ Sunday, with a new series that fits into the previously established Season of Creation in September. The brand-new worship series and study guide for Feast of Creation/Creation in Christ will be available in the summer of 2026.
