Boston University School of Theology, the oldest American Methodist theological school,
launched its Faith and Ecological Justice (FEJ) Certificate in the fall of 2019. By exploring
theological, artistic, spiritual, political, and ethical responses to our ecological crises, the FEJ
Program both prepares students for meaningful and effective engagement in faith-based
environmental work and helps them explore the rich depth of religious resources for such work.
Students in the program take advantage of the rich expertise of BU STH faculty while also
having access to ecologically-focused courses in the wider setting of our research university and
in the ten affiliated Boston Theological Interreligious Consortium schools. Engagement with
community partners through field education, field trips, and guest speakers is a key component
of the program. Students may participate in the program and take classes as part of their
degree programs without pursuing the certificate, complete the certificate as part of their
degree program, or earn the certificate outside of a degree program.
